The Bullet Ant (Paraponera clavata) is an ant species known for its extremely potent sting. They live in humid lowland rainforests from Nicaragua and the east of the Honduras and south to Paraguay. The Bullet Ant resembles a stout, red-black, wingless wasp. There is no polymorphism in the worker caste, and the queen ant is not much larger than the workers. There are several hundreds of individual ants at the bases of trees, and the workers ants forage in the trees above the nests for small arthropods and nectar; nectar is the most common food taken back to the nest.
The Bullet Ant has an overall body length between .71”-1.18” (18-30 mm), body width of .16”-.28” (4-7 mm), and body height of .12”-.2” (3-5 mm). The typical lifespan of the Bullet Ant is between 2-3 months for a worker and 1-2 years for a Queen.
