A Football Official is tasked with enforcing the rules in a game of football. There are seven officials in a professional football game, though there are other organized football games with eight officials.
These officials can be: a referee who handles the supervision of the game; the umpire watches the game from behind the defensive line and linebackers looking for illegal blocks and holding; the head linesman looks out for offsides, fouls, and encroachment; the line judge works with the head linesman, noting fouls and offsides; the field judge/side judge/back judge watches for actions of the linebackers, receivers, and defenders and ruling on incomplete passes, pass interference and illegal blocks; and the center judge who stands beside the referee, assisting the referee and umpire in penalty marking and ball spotting.
