Maman is a large sculpture that embraces the form of a large spider. Maman was created by Louise Bourgeois in 1999 and was commissioned by The Unilever Series. The sculpture depicts the spider with tall legs and a sac with 32 eggs. Maman was created as a reference to the artist’s mother representing her strength, nurture, and protection. The sculpture is an ode to her mother symbolized through the form of a spider. The Maman sculpture is made from steel, marble, and bronze.
