The Apatosaurus is a herbivorous sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period in North America. Its fossils were found in modern day Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah. It was a robust animal with a single claw on each forelimb and three on each hindlimb; its long and whip-like tail was held above the ground during normal locomotion. The first Apatosaurus bones were discovered by Edward Drinker Cope, but the name was coined in 1877 by his rival Othniel Charles Marsh. Its name translates to ”deceptive lizard” due to the chevron bones that are different to those of other dinosaurs.
The Apatosaurus had an overall length between 69’-75’ (21-23 m), standing height of 17.1’-18.7’ (5.2-5.7 m), body width of 6.9’-7.5’ (2.1-2.3 m), and weight from 36,000-49,000 lb (16,330-22,226 kg). The typical lifespan of the Apatosaurus was between 70-100 years.
