Description
Description

Bent Grass (Agrostis capillaris), also known as Common Bent, Colonial Bent, or Highland Bent, is a fine-textured, perennial grass native to Europe and parts of Asia. It belongs to the Poaceae family and is widely recognized for its delicate, wiry stems and soft, feathery seed heads that create a hazy, light-catching effect in fields and meadows. As a pastoral grass, it is often found in upland pastures, open grasslands, heathlands, and moorlands, especially in cool, temperate climates. It grows in dense, low mats, making it suitable for grazing livestock and resilient in poor or acidic soils.

Agrostis capillaris is particularly noted for its tolerance of close mowing and its role in traditional hay meadows and unimproved grasslands. Ecologically, it supports a range of invertebrates and contributes to biodiversity in semi-natural habitats. Its aesthetic qualities and adaptability have also led to use in ornamental landscapes and golf courses, particularly in temperate regions.
