Right now, we only have memories of the Bluebuck (Hippotragus leucophaeus) as it is currently extinct. It inhabited the coastal plains of southern South Africa. Evidence suggests that the blueback was a large grazer with bluish-gray coats but pale whitish on the belly. It had black strong horns and less developed manes. It also had short, blunter ears and a darker-tailed tuft. The forehead on the other side was brown and the face darker. The neck was relatively long but strong, the mane short and underdeveloped, and the long white legs covered in dark bands on the front part. It was gregarious, living in small herds. Males were larger than females with large, backward-curving horns.
Bluebucks have a standing shoulder height between 39.4”-47.2” (100-120 cm), overall body length from 61”-94.5” (155-190 cm), standing height of roughly 50”-61” (127-155 cm), and a body width of 13.4”-15.75” (34-40 cm). The weight of a Bluebuck is between 265-441 lb (120-200 kg). Bluebucks have a typical lifespan of 15-22 years.
