The Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) can be found in much of sub-Saharan Africa. It favors areas with scrubs, savannahs, and grasslands near a water source since it can’t stand dehydration. It has a mane and the legs are short while the neck is long. The coat hair is coarse and can be gray or red-brown. There are white rings above the hooves. Male waterbucks have forward curved horns and the older a bull is, the longer its horns. This robust build animal prefers sedentary life and is very social with males and females aggregating in the same herd.
Waterbucks have a standing shoulder height between 47.2”-53.5” (120-136 cm), overall body length from 70.9”-92.5” (180-235 cm), standing height of roughly 57.1”-74” (145-188 cm), and a body width of 15.75”-21.3” (40-54 cm). The weight of a Waterbuck is between 353-573 lb (160-260 kg). Waterbucks have a typical lifespan of 11-30 years.
