The Border Terrier is a small dog in the terrier group originally bred as a fox and vermin hunter. The breed shares ancestry with the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier. They were bred to have long legs to keep up with horses and foxhounds, and bred to have small bodies to crawl in the foxes’ burrows. Other physical characteristics include otter-shaped heads, V-shaped ears on the sides of the head, and a double coat with a soft undercoat and a harsh dirt-resistant outercoat. At times they can be stubborn and strong willed, but they are mostly friendly and rarely aggressive.
Border Terriers have a withers height between 12”-15” (30-38 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 11-16 lb (5-7 kg). The Border Terrier has an overall body length of roughly 17”-20” (43-51 cm), standing height between 17”-20” (43-51 cm), and a typical lifespan of 12-15 years.
