The Saluki is a breed of dog developed from sighthounds (dogs that hunt by sight rather than by scent). Originally bred in the Fertile Crescent, they are closely related to the Afghan Hound. They have a deep-chested and long-legged body, and their coats come in smooth and feathered and in a variety of colors- white, cream, fawn, red, grizzle/tan, black/tan, and tri-color (white, black, and tan). Historically used by nomadic tribes as hunting dogs, the Saluki is very fast and has remarkable stamina. Their qualities as hunting hounds have remained, and they can be reserved to strangers.
Salukis have a withers height between 18”-28” (46-71 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 35-60 lb (16-27 kg). The Saluki has an overall body length of roughly 26”-38” (66-97 cm), standing height between 24”-35” (61-89 cm), and a typical lifespan of 10-15 years.
