The stem is usually rounded with costapalmate fan-shaped gray-green leaves of numerous leaflets. It favors hot summers and is drought tolerant and brackish water tolerant. It is also resistant to fires, floods, and harsh coastal conditions. The cabbage name comes from its terminal bud shaped like a cabbage.
