The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is a powerful eagle found in the neotropical region. The species occupies tropical lowland rainforests in the upper canopy level. Physically the Harpy Eagle has slate-black feathers and a white underside with the exception of the striped-black feathered tarsi. The head is pale gray, and a broad black band across the upper breast separates the head from the belly. The tail’s upper side is black with three gray bands, and the underside is black with three white bands. As the species is at the top of the food chain, they are rarely preyed on, and their diet is mostly tree-dwelling mammals like sloths and monkeys.
The Harpy Eagle has a wingspan in the range of 69.3”-88.2” (176-224 cm) and total weight of 8.8-19.8 lb (4-9 kg). The body of the Harpy Eagle has an overall length between 34.3”-42.9” (87-109 cm), body width of 9.1”-11.8” (23-30 cm), and standing height of roughly 21.7”-26.6” (55-67.5 cm). The typical lifespan of the Harpy Eagle is between 25-35 years.
