The Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) is endemic to India. This is in the mountain grassland habitats, especially in the Nilgiri hills. It has a stocky profile with coarse, short fur. Females are easily distinguished from males as they are smaller and have tawny gray coats with light underparts. Adult males have darker coats, usually deep blackish-brown. Adult males may also have a black face and a pair of silver stripes running from the horns to the muzzle. Both sexes have short, arcing horns. The Nilgiri tahr is diurnal, most active between dawn and dusk. It lives in groups of mixed or single-sex herds.
