At a glance, the Pumi may not look like a hardworking herder. This is because of its compact size, whimsical expression, and corkscrew-curled coat. However, it can herd flocks thanks to its boldness, agility, intelligence, quick movement, and lean muscular body type. Apart from its corkscrew curls and mid-size, the Pumi also has expressive ears that are two-thirds erect, a deep chest, square outline, and a short tail forming a circle over its back. They are originally from Hungary, created by cross-breeding German and French herding dogs with the Hungarian Pulik. The coat can be white, grey, black, or fawn.
Pumis have a withers height between 15”-18” (38-46 cm) and a typical weight in the range of 18-35 lb (8-16 kg). The Pumi has an overall body length of roughly 23”-27” (58-69 cm), standing height between 20”-23” (51-58 cm), and a typical lifespan of 12-14 years.
