The Strawberry Squid (Histioteuthis heteropsis) is a small species of squid with a set of different sized eyes. One of the eyes is small and blue while the other one is large and yellow. It is believed that the large eye sees objects at dim light and the smaller eye views bioluminescent light sources. The Strawberry Squid was named after its red pigmentation and photophores along its body that makes it appear like a strawberry with seeds. The Strawberry Squid lives in the Pacific Ocean is generally found in the California Current and the Humboldt Current. They eat shrimp, fishes, and at times other squid.
The Strawberry Squid has an overall length between 13”-39.4” (33-100 cm) and mantle length of 5.1”-14.5” (13-37 cm).
