The Tecate Cypress (Cupressus forbesii), also referenced as the Forbes’ Cypress is an evergreen coniferous cypress tree species that is known for being the only tree in which Thorne’s Hairstreak butterfly lays its eggs. The Tecate Cypress is native to the southwestern region of North America typically found within the montane chaparral and woodlands habitats in the western Peninsular Ranges. The bark of its trunk has a reddish to mahogany color that flakes off every year. The foliage of the Tecate Cypress ranges from a light to deep green coloring. The Tecate Cypress is non-flowering and produces seed cones. The Tecate Cypress is considered vulnerable to extinction.
Tecate Cypresses have a typical overall height between 15’-30’ (4.6-9.1 m) and spread diameter of 15’-30’ (4.6-9.1 m). Exceptional mature Tecate Cypress trees may grow to heights of 32.8’ (10 m) in the wild. The trunk of the Tecate Cypress has a diameter of 1.6’-2.6’ (.5-.8 m) with scale-like leaf lengths between .05”-.08” (1.2-2 mm).
