The name Teosinte (dioon mejiae) means “sacred ear”. This tree is also called teocsinte, teocinte, tusinte, or teocinta. It is found in Honduras and Nicaragua in tropical and subtropical environments, growing in places with both adequate and inadequate sunlight. It is beautiful and decorative, hence ideal for landscaping. The seeds are edible while the leaves are used in religious activities. This medium-to-large evergreen tree grows stiff, upright leaves coming out of the unbranched trunk with aerial stems that are well-developed. Male cones are spindle-shaped and pale brown, while female cones are large, ovoidal, and pale brown as well.
