The Yellow Goatfish is not sought after by commercial fisheries as it is rumored to carry the ciguatera toxin rendering it inedible.
The Yellow Goatfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region, possessing a body covered in different colors. The back is red-orange, the belly and flanks are white, the fins are yellow, and the sides show a yellow stripe. During the day you will mostly see this fish congregating in large schools. The body is elongated and cylindrical while the snout is blunt, head flat, and mouth small. It prefers rocky, coral reefs and sandy areas. This fish has barbels or whiskers under the chin; a feature used to separate it from the yellowtail snapper it co-exists with.
Yellow Goatfishs have a total length between 3.9”-12.2” (10-31 cm) and body height of .6”-2.6” (1.5-6.5 cm). The typical lifespan of the Yellow Goatfish is in the range of 5-8 years.
