One of his early commissions, Azuma House, is a concrete building in Osaka made without exterior windows and only an interior courtyard for light. Some of his other well-known work includes his housing complex at Rokko and the Kujo townhouse, also in Osaka. In 1995 he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
