Extended Puppy Pose is a beginner inversion posture that creates space and length in the spine. Extended Puppy Pose also stretches the chest and can be used anytime during a Yogi’s practice. Use postures such as Downward Facing Dog and Hero Pose to prepare for Extended Puppy Pose and follow up with a Child’s Pose.
To do Extended Puppy Pose, begin on hands and knees and walk the hands forward a few inches while curling the toes under. On an exhale move the sit bones about halfway towards the heels while the arms remain active and do not let the elbows reach the ground. Next, drop the forehead to the earth or a folded blanket pressing the hands down and stretching through the arms for a good spine stretch. Take a few long deep breaths into the back and release, sitting back to the heels.
