The Kudu is a two spiral-horned antelope species in the Bovidae family: the Lesser Kudu and the Greater Kudu. The svelte Lesser Kudu (T. imberbis) is an enigmatic dweller in the lowland thorn forest of northeast and east Africa. The Lesser Kudu is marked vividly by 11 to 15 vertical white bands, large patches on the chest and throat, a nose chevron, and patches on the cheek. The legs are tawny and adorned with black and white stripes, the tail is bushy with a white underside and a black top, and the dorsal crest is small and upright. Both Kudu species feed on more than 100 different fruits, seeds, plants, vines, and scrubs.
Lesser Kudus have a shoulder height between 35.4”-43.3” (90-110 cm), body length from 49”-61” (125-154 cm), standing height of roughly 47.6”-58.3” (121-148 cm), and a body width of 12.6”-15.75” (32-40 cm). The horns of a Lesser Kudu are between 20”-28” (50.8-71.1 cm). Weights of Lesser Kudu vary between males and females with males weighing between 198-243 lb (90-110 kg) and females from 275-342 lb (125-155 kg). Lesser Kudus have a typical lifespan of 7-15 years in the wild and 15-20 years in captivity.
