Balin was one of the thirteen dwarves who accompanied Thorin Oakenshield in his quest to regain the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. He was the second oldest of the thirteen dwarves and was considered the deputy leader of the group. Balin was one of Thorin’s closest advisors, and was known for his wisdom, bravery and loyalty. He was the only dwarf to follow Bilbo Baggins through the side-door of the Lonely Mountain. After Smaug’s defeat, Balin took up residence in Lonely Mountain with the surviving members of the quest. He later went on to retake Moira but was killed when the kingdom was overrun by Orcs.
Balin is portrayed in the Hobbit films as having a height of 4’11” (1.50 m) based on a comparative analysis of film frames.
