He assisted Thorin Oakenshield in the Quest of Erebor and fought in the Battle of Five Armies. He inadvertently became one of the bearers of the One Ring, discovering it in the High Pass of the Misty Mountains. He held on to it for several years before voluntarily giving it to his nephew Frodo, who eventually destroyed it in the fires of Mordor.
