The American Wirehair cat, known for its wiry, dense, and coarse coat is a playful, yet affectionate cat. The American Wirehair cat was first discovered in 1966 after two barn cats produced a litter of cats with unusually wiry fur. Only one cat survived, Adam, and the pair of barn cats never had any more wiry litters.
Once taken in by Joan O’Shea, who originally thought the cat may be a Rex, it was discovered Adam was an entirely new breed after some of his furs were sent to a British cat genetics lab. Similar to the American Curl cat, the American Wirehair resulted from a dominate spontaneous gene mutation. Loving and in tune with their owner’s emotions, the American Wirehair is a unique cat with a favorable personality.
American Wirehair Cats have an overall height of 8”-10" (20-25 cm), body length of 11”-13” (28-33 cm), and weight between 8-15 lb (3.6-6.8 kg). American Wirehair Cats have a typical lifespan between 10-16 years.
