The Selkirk Rex, an immediately recognizable cat by its curly, fluffy, lamb-like coat, is a medium to large cat with dense bones, which give the cat a surprising weight. The Selkirk Rex is a very people-oriented, yet mellow, cat that loves to be in the company of its family. Discovered in Montana by Jeri Newman, a passionate cat geneticist, the Selkirk Rex was the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation.
Much newer than other rex cats, such as the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex, the first Selkirk Rex was born in 1987. Newman raised the first Selkirk Rex, Miss DePesto, until she was old enough to breed, thus setting the wheels in motion for the population of Selkirk cats. Newman named the breed after her stepfather making Selkirk Rexes the only breed to be named after a person.
Selkirk Rex Cats have an overall height of 9”-11” (23-28 cm), body length of 12”-15” (30-38 cm), and weight between 9-16 lb (4.1-7.3 kg). Selkirk Rex Cats have a typical lifespan between 12-15 years.
